New Prairie Middle School Bands
Middle School Handbook
Below is a copy of the 2017-2018 NPMS Bands Handbook!
In the beginning band class, students learn to read and play music for the instrument selected, play songs in unison and then songs in parts throughout the school year. They perform in two concerts each year (Christmas and Spring) and have opportunities to take private lessons if they so choose. Students are required to practice each day on their own, and are prompted regularly to do so. Playing alone and with others is tested regularly, and regular written assessments are given to support knowledge.
The 7th grade band is a year long course where students continue to develop ensemble and individual rehearsal skills and instrumental technique. Students will play music of several different genres and will perform at the Winter Concert, Solo and Ensemble Contest and Spring Concerts.
The 8th grade band is a year-long course where students continue to develop ensemble rehearsal skills and instrumental technique. The course prepares students for the transition into high school band. Students in the 8th grade band participate in a high school pregame performance, Fall Sampler, Winter Concert, Solo and Ensemble Contest, ISSMA Contest and the Spring Concert.
NPMS General Music
Both the 6th and 7th grade general music classes will be 18 weeks (1 semester) in length during the 2016-2017 school year. This course will include many of the same elements as in previous years. Students learn about many non-performance aspects of music, such as history, composers' lives, world music, guitars, contemporary music and music technology. Students also are given written assessments to support knowledge as well as regular opportunities to demonstrate understanding of music concepts.
